The 2023/24 La Liga season has begun, and it looks like the league’s strongest team is once again the favorite to win the title. TOP 10 best-paid players in La Liga
Real Madrid and Barcelona form something of a duopoly within Spain’s elite, with Real’s rivals Atlético Madrid sometimes threatened with a three-way alliance.
Let’s take a look at La Liga’s 10 highest-paid players for the 2023/24 season by annual salary. All data provided by Capology.
TOP 10 best-paid players in La Liga
1 Frenkie de Jong
If you Google “Frenkie de Jong’s salary at FC Barcelona”, you’ll see a variety of figures.
According to Capologie, it will be 37.5 million euros a year, significantly more than his La Liga rivals. The Dutch player made perhaps the biggest decision of the year in 2020, so it’s no surprise that he’s currently quite wealthy. But it probably wasn’t expected to exceed 250,000 a week. De Jong has three years left on his contract and over 100 million euros on his contract. No wonder Barça are bankrupt.
2 Toni Kroos
Toni Kroos is not your typical Madrid player. The German became a club legend after helping the club win the Champions League four times. When Kroos helped his former club Bayern Munich win the title in 2013, he even achieved the same number of victories as Cristiano Ronaldo.
His huge contract is a reward for such performances, but it looks like this season could be his last as he ends a brilliant career in Madrid. In Madrid, he receives an annual salary
3 David Alaba
David Alaba, who also plays for Real Madrid, is Austria’s tallest player and the team’s reliable defender.
His high-profile departure from Bayern Munich in 2021 has attracted a lot of media attention, partly because of the huge contract he has signed with his new team. Thanks to this contract, the 33-year-old will earn around €70 million. Madrid fans will argue that every penny will be worth it if he can return to his best at Bayern. At the Merengue, the defender earns €22.5 million a year.
4 Luka Modric
Luka Modric is also La Liga’s highest-paid player for the 2023/24 season. Real Madrid pay him 420,769 euros per week, equivalent to an annual salary of 21.88 million euros. Luka Modric plays primarily as a central midfielder, but can also be deployed as an attacking or defensive midfielder. His contract expires on June 30, 2023.
5 Jan Oblak
Slovenia’s Jan Oblak is one of the highest-paid players in La Liga history and one of the best goalkeepers in the world. In 2017, he was granted a contract extension until 2028. Atlético Madrid will pay him a weekly salary of 400,577 euros, for a total of 20.83 million euros a year.
6 Robert Lewandowski
Robert Lewandowski is captain of the Polish national team and striker for FC Barcelona. He is one of La Liga’s top scorers. Barcelona will pay Robert Lewandowski a weekly salary of 400,577 euros (20.83 million euros a year), and his contract expires on June 30, 2026.
7 Vinícius Jr
Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior’s contract runs until June 30, 2024. The club pays him 400,577 euros a week (20.83 million euros a year). He has played 222 games in six seasons with Real Madrid, scoring 55 goals.
8 Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham’s melodrama came to an end when Borussia Dortmund announced that he had reached an agreement with Real Madrid. The young Englishman, also wanted by Liverpool and Manchester City, immediately gave priority to the White House, who were to offer him a six-year contract.
A rising star in midfield, the 19-year-old will have the onerous task of succeeding Luka Modric and Toni Kroos in the medium term. The Merengue coach clearly has a great deal of faith in him, as evidenced by his first-year salary. He receives 20.83 million euros per year.
9 Ilkay Gündoğan
After Germany and England, Ilkay Gundogan is discovering the Spanish league. The 32-year-old midfielder is playing for FC Barcelona this season.
Gundogan has signed a two-year contract with Barça until June 2025, with an option for a further year. The Blaugrana are offering an experienced top-class player who has just won the Champions League without paying a small transfer fee. His annual salary in Catalonia is €18.75 million.
10 Koke
Spanish midfielder Koke earns €307,692 a week (€16 million a year) at Atlético Madrid, where he is also captain. He has excellent positioning, passing and ball-handling skills. In 2017, Koke signed a five-year contract extension until June 30, 2024.
