Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting may not remain without a club for much longer. The Cameroonian international, who has spent several months as a free agent, appears close to finalizing his return to action.
Since leaving Bayern Munich on July 1, the 35-year-old forward has been officially unattached. However, according to Florian Plettenberg, a well-informed journalist from Sky Sport Germany, Choupo-Moting is set to take on a new challenge. He is reportedly on the verge of signing with the New York Red Bulls in MLS, a move that could mark an intriguing chapter in the twilight of his career.

According to the same sources, all negotiations have been successfully concluded, and the official documents have been signed. The Cameroonian international, with 73 caps and 20 goals to his name but absent from national team call-ups since last June, has completed his medical examination without issue. He has signed a two-year contract set to begin in January 2025.
If Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting does indeed join the New York Red Bulls, it will mark the eighth club of his career and a significant step into uncharted territory. So far, his journey has been largely centered in Germany, with notable stints in England (Stoke City) and France with PSG. At the Red Bulls, he will join fellow Africans Mohammed Sofo and Ronald Donkor, the only other players from the continent in a team currently ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference.
This move could also reignite Choupo-Moting’s international career. After being sidelined by former coach Rigobert Song, he briefly returned under Marc Brys but was last called up in June without making an appearance. A strong comeback on the pitch could pave the way for him to reclaim his spot in the national team.
