Since the end of his second stint with Real Madrid, Zinedine Zidane’s name has frequently been mentioned as a potential successor to Didier Deschamps as head coach of the French national team.

However, despite pivotal moments, such as the defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final or the elimination against Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinals, the French Football Federation (FFF) has never appeared to seriously consider appointing the former number 10 of Les Bleus.

Zidane as Coach of the French National Team: A Major Revelation Unveiled!

Behind-the-Scenes Opposition?

The role of Noël Le Graët, former president of the FFF, seems to be at the heart of the speculation. According to Jamel Sandjak, president of the Paris Île-de-France League, certain influential figures within the federation may have hindered the prospect of Zidane taking over as head coach of the French national team. Speaking to RMC Sport, Sandjak hinted at resistance:

“Who doesn’t want Zinedine Zidane? You know very well, Daniel (Riolo). Le Graët? So it’s not ‘nobody.’ Yes, there are people who don’t want him.”

Although he refrained from elaborating further, his remarks suggest that the opposition to Zidane might be more institutional than purely sporting.

The Shadow of Didier Deschamps

Didier Deschamps, who has held the position since 2012, remains firmly entrenched as head coach. Despite recent setbacks, such as the Euro 2024 elimination, he continues to enjoy the backing of the FFF and appears determined to carry on. As long as Deschamps does not choose to step down, the chances of Zidane replacing him remain slim.

A Matter of Timing?

For Zidane, one of the most respected coaches in the world, leading the French national team seems like a natural ambition. However, as Sandjak pointed out, “this is not the time to talk about it.” The opportunity may arise, but only when the circumstances align, and all parties are ready to embrace a new chapter.

For now, Zinedine Zidane remains in the background, likely observing the situation with patience, waiting for the right moment to step forward.
