FIFA has come down hard on Leroy Sané. The German striker from Bayern Munich has just been sanctioned by the world football governing body.
Leroy Sané now knows his punishment. The Bayern star has been suspended by FIFA after receiving a red card in the match against Austria, preventing him from playing with the German national team almost until the Euro.
3 matches for Leroy Sané
FIFA has imposed a three-match suspension on Leroy Sané due to his red card in the friendly match against Austria. This means he will miss the friendly matches against France and the Netherlands in March, as well as the first of the two planned friendly matches before the Euro. Additionally, Sané has been fined around 2700 euros, as reported by FCB Inside.
However, the judgment is not yet final. The German Football Association (DFB) is awaiting the reasons for the judgment and could appeal once they are available. The federation stated, “Following media reports: The procedure regarding a possible suspension of Leroy Sané is still ongoing. FIFA’s judgment is not yet final.” There is still a possibility of a reduction in the suspension.
Leroy Sané, celebrating his 28th birthday on January 11, had received a red card during the 2-0 defeat of the German national team in Austria. In the 49th minute of the match in Vienna, a slight foul committed on Sané led to an altercation with the opponent Philipp Mwene. Sané jumped off the ground and pushed Mwene backward, holding his neck with one hand and his face with the other.
What happened between Leroy Sané and Mwene?
It is November 21, 2023, and Leroy Sané did not shine in the friendly match between Austria and Germany this Tuesday. Besides his offensive inefficiency, the German winger lost his temper and received the first red card of his career after an altercation with Philipp Mwene.
The start of Julian Nagelsmann’s tenure with the German team is not going smoothly. Although he started with a victory against the United States in October, the new coach has had several unsuccessful matches since.
Even worse, after an initial defeat against Turkey (2-3), Antonio Rudiger’s teammates suffered another setback on November 21 in a friendly match against Austria, marked by Leroy Sané’s mental breakdown, who was rightfully expelled after a moment of anger towards Philipp Mwene.
After losing the ball early in the second half, Leroy Sané let his frustration explode. Although he tried everything to regain the ball against his opponent, he committed a particularly severe foul. Just for this initial gesture, the former prospect of Schalke 04 and Manchester City could have received a warning.
Leroy Sané, before there was Sadio Mané
Following Philipp Mwene’s provocation, Leroy Sané immediately got up to push him violently to the ground. Logically expelled by the referee, the 27-year-old German international lost his composure, thus receiving the first red card of his career. This happened after playing 402 official matches with his various clubs and in the national team.
Leroy Sané has occasionally shown signs of nervousness in the past, as seen in his altercation at Bayern with Sadio Mané earlier in the year. A violent altercation had occurred between the two Munich players after the heavy defeat in the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Manchester City (3-0) in April 2023.
The Senegalese international had not appreciated some words from the German winger, and he had struck him in the face in the locker room. This situation had plunged Bayern Munich into an unprecedented crisis. Since then, Sadio Mané has moved to Saudi Arabia, while the German international continues his journey with the Bavarian club.
