André Ayew, the captain of the Black Stars, remains hopeful of lifting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) before the end of his career, inspired by Max Gradel.
The 34-year-old player has yet to win the African Nations Cup with Ghana despite his outstanding performances. In the last AFCON, Ghana was eliminated early, in the group stage, after a loss to Cape Verde and draws against Mozambique and Egypt.
For the captain of the Black Stars, this is just a passing phase. “We are going through a tough period, but we will get through it, I’m sure of it,” he stated.
In a recent interview, André Ayew reaffirmed his dream of winning the continental title. “When I see players who are 37 years old and older like Max Gradel, I think to myself that I can also be an African champion at any moment…” he expressed.
It’s worth noting that Max Gradel retired from international football after winning his second AFCON title with Ivory Coast.
Ghana has won the Africa Cup of Nations four times: in 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982. In 2014, they held the record for the most finals played (8).
The Black Stars have also participated in three FIFA World Cup final stages: in 2006, 2010 (where they reached the quarter-finals), and 2014.
Now 34 years old, André Ayew still has the chance to compete in the next AFCON in 2025 in Morocco and attempt to win the title.
