Year 1 of Christian Atsu’s death: Chelsea and Newcastle pay tribute to the Ghanaian winger

Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle United have paid tribute to the late Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu as the world celebrates the first anniversary of his tragic death.

Exactly one year to the day, on February 6, 2023, Christian Atsu disappeared beneath the rubble following the destructive earthquake that struck southern Turkey. He was later confirmed dead after his lifeless body was pulled from the rubble. This followed days of intense searching by local and international units in the area.

The former Black Stars winger was then laid to rest on Friday March 17, 2022, in his hometown of Ada, in the Greater Accra region of Ghana. On the anniversary of his tragic death, Premier League clubs Chelsea and Newcastle United paid tribute to the late Ghanaian footballer.

In a post on their respective social networks, the English stables declared that their thoughts were eternally with Atsu’s family and loved ones, while describing their former player as an incredible person. “One year ago today, we tragically lost Christian Atsu. Our thoughts will always be with Christian’s family and friends”, Chelsea wrote on their X account.

“An incredible person who is fondly remembered by everyone at Newcastle United. Our thoughts are always with Christian’s family and friends. Oh, he’s so wonderful,” posted the Magpies. Christian Atsu was 31 at the time of his death. The former footballer left a widow and three children.
