The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, recently made a statement that might not sit well with Ivorians.

He expressed confidence that the 35th edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) will be “the best in the history of this competition.”

This announcement comes after CAN 2024, held in Côte d’Ivoire, was widely praised as one of the best ever, both for the emotions it stirred and the level of competition displayed. “I am convinced that CAN 2025 will be a huge success and will be the best in the history of this competition,” Motsepe asserted in a statement, while justifying the postponement of CAN.

Motsepe cited “complex and sometimes difficult discussions” with various stakeholders, partly due to busy schedules of international and national competitions, as reasons for the date change. “The announcement of the CAN 2025 dates took much longer than anticipated due to complex and sometimes difficult discussions with various stakeholders, in light of very busy international and national match calendars.

CAF is committed to protecting and advancing the interests of African players playing for football clubs in Europe and worldwide,” he stated. Commitments of CAF Motsepe also emphasized CAF’s commitment to establishing mutually beneficial relationships with the European Club Association (ECA), UEFA, other football confederations, and FIFA. “We will continue to make significant strides in developing and ensuring that African football is competitive globally and among the best in the world,” he added.

Challenge for CAN 2025 CAN 2024 in Côte d’Ivoire left a lasting impression and is considered one of the best organized in the competition’s history. The next edition in Morocco will therefore have the daunting task of surpassing this legacy and elevating the CAN to one of the world’s greatest football events
