Ivorian football legend Didier Drogba envisions an African team becoming the champion of the upcoming Club World Cup.
The tournament, which will be held from June 15 to July 13, 2025, in the United States, will feature 32 teams from six confederations.
Africa will also be represented by numerous clubs on a mission to achieve a brilliant performance.
In a recent interview, Didier Drogba sees the Club World Cup as a unique opportunity for African teams.
According to the Ivorian legend, African clubs have every chance to steal the spotlight from the world’s biggest clubs at the Club World Cup. “I think it’s an excellent opportunity for clubs and players to compete at the highest level. There’s already the World Cup, but it only takes place every four years, and not everyone has the chance to participate,” argues Didier Drogba.
He continues: “The Club World Cup will be a recurring event that will bring more competitions, more matches, and thus more opportunities for players to become world champions.”
“Imagine what a player from Ivory Coast, or anywhere in Africa, could feel if they become world champion against all the big clubs, like Chelsea, Barcelona, or Real Madrid,” says the former Ivory Coast star.
“This competition will be very important for African teams because it will be an opportunity for them to show what they are capable of,” he assured.
Didier Drogba also admitted that he would have loved to compete in a Club World Cup before the end of his career.
