Former Chelsea and Arsenal star, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, now playing for Olympique de Marseille, has expressed his gratitude to Didier Drogba for playing a crucial role in an important life decision.

Aubameyang could have continued his international career with the French national team, having represented France at the youth level. However, despite this opportunity, he chose to represent Gabon at the senior level, a decision he credits to the influence of Ivorian football legend, Didier Drogba.

In an interview with L’Equipe, the footballer revealed the significant role Drogba played in his decision to choose Africa over Europe. Recalling his time at Dijon during the 2008-2009 season, Aubameyang reflected on watching a DVD about Drogba’s illustrious career, especially his stint at Olympique de Marseille, saying:

“Drogba… When I was playing at Dijon (2008-2009), I was living with my best friend and my mother, and a DVD came out about Drogba, his career, his time at OM. It was actually a DVD from L’Equipe (Didier Drogba, The Incredible Destiny, published in 2007). I watched it on repeat and thought: ‘It’s crazy, he explodes at 30. At that time, I had to make my choice for Gabon. But actually, I didn’t hesitate, it made me want to do the same thing, what he represented for his country, it was an incredible source of inspiration.” The DVD, titled “Didier Drogba, The Incredible Destiny,” left a lasting impression on Aubameyang, prompting him to follow in Drogba’s footsteps and represent his native country, Gabon.

Despite notable success, Aubameyang remains humble and grateful for the influence Didier Drogba had on his career. Speaking after being named the best African player in Ligue 1, Aubameyang expressed his admiration for Drogba and acknowledged him as a true football legend.

“There’s no possible comparison: Drogba remains Drogba. He’s a legend. Afterward, I’m very happy and very proud that people think of it. But we are two completely different players. He is the legend, and I want to continue writing my story. I had the chance to tell him that he was my idol when I was younger. I don’t know if he realizes it, but he’s someone who has inspired many people around the world, especially me, in my career and my African journey. He inspired a generation with his talent and his work,” he added.

Aubameyang has represented Gabon 75 times and is the country’s top scorer with 30 goals, as well as its current captain. He has participated in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments with the Panthers.
