Ivory Coast football legend, Didier Drogba, recently discussed the impact of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in a recent interview.

The former player mentioned his greatest career regret: not winning the African Cup with the Elephants.

Ivory Coast won its second AFCON in 2015 just after Didier Drogba’s departure, with Yaya Touré lifting the trophy as captain.

“The 2023 AFCON victory eased my regrets. It’s true that my biggest regret remains football-related. Not being able to achieve one of my goals with the national team, which was winning at least one African Cup of Nations.

Nevertheless, this regret was mitigated by the Elephants’ triumph at the 2023 AFCON. My pride is that all my younger brothers who won this AFCON in 2023 called me at some point to say, ‘Old man, we did it for you.’

That’s my greatest pride,” he affirmed.

After his career, the former Chelsea footballer stayed by the Elephants’ side. Although he failed to become president of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), his presence and involvement during the 2023 AFCON were notable.

Present at every Elephants match, Didier Drogba often offered his insights on the game, congratulated players when necessary, and boosted their morale when needed.

His presence, despite not being a coach, was a significant support for the national team.
