Ivorian coach Emerse Faé made a statement regarding the Africa Cup of Nations, which has sparked debate among internet users.
Indeed, the coach suggested that it would be easier for players if the AFCON were held every 4 years, similar to certain European competitions.
“It would be good to be like in Europe and South America and play every four years. I think it would be easier for the players because they would have fewer matches and they might be stronger if they play less.
All the players in Côte d’Ivoire want to come to the national team to play for their country.
So, at every international break, we will have all our players and we will be ready for the matches,” said Emerse Faé.
However, several aspects must be considered beyond this. The AFCON serves as a real business opportunity for host countries, and the age of African players is also a factor.
According to internet users, playing the AFCON every 4 years may disadvantage older players.
“We disagree with what he’s saying there. Besides, the last AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire already feels missed, we are eager to experience that sensation again.”
“Bad thinking. Every two years is better, that way Africa will develop quickly. Ahead of each AFCON, there are always new infrastructures.”
“Except that every 4 years, there will still be other championships and the competition year will always be long for the players. So we will inevitably have the same problems (injuries, players’ lack of freshness, etc…).”
“So every 4 years, we will have a new national team huh, you think our African players are children,” reads comments.
