During an interview with NCI, Franck Kessié reflected on the watches he and Seko Fofana gifted to their teammates. He expressed it in these terms:

“The idea of gifts to teammates, it’s Seko’s idea. He came and explained it to me. The idea didn’t come after the final, but rather after the match lost against Nigeria.

He told me he knew a company that could make rings for each of us with our names on them as a souvenir. I told him to talk to them and together, we would sort out the accounts.

After the round of 16, I suggested watches to him and the guy (the provider) said it was possible. That’s how we prepared these gifts for the next gathering after the final.”

It is worth mentioning that a few days ago, Seko Fofana and Franck Kessié surprised their teammates by giving them valuable watches.

To each of their teammates, they offered a Rolex GMT Master II watch. Note that the price of this watch varies between €10,500 and €42,050.

On social media, they posted photos of this jewel, while expressing their gratitude towards Franck Kessié and Seko Fofana. See the photos below: [link to photos].

This generous gesture by the two players towards their teammates subsequently sparked a debate on social media. According to some, they should have used this money to help the people in need. Here are some reactions:

“It’s not bad, but it would also be very kind of you to look into the case of the victims of evictions in Abidjan. Among them are also people who supported you during our wonderful CAN 2023.

Truly magnificent. But now, we wait patiently for us, the supporters.

They would have done better to give all this money to dozens of poor families. Footballers are just doing their job but they are well paid.

Those who received these watches don’t have the money to buy them, do they? The money could help the poor, but they give it to people who already have money again.

These watches, they will just lose them in hotel rooms, right. And then some greedy person will take them and post on Snapchat. Hmm.

I think they could have offered essential goods to poor families instead of giving watches to people who can afford them.”
