Ivorian international and 2023 Africa Cup of Nations champion Seko Fofana expressed his greatest pride in an interview on NCI Sports.

“Today, my biggest pride is meeting people on the street, where whenever I have the chance, they express their feelings about the entire AFCON, the emotions they felt, and their gratitude. So that’s my greatest pride. And we had a lot of fun,” he declared.

Fofana’s impact during the 2023 AFCON was undeniable. His determination enabled Ivory Coast to achieve miracles, propelling them to the semi-finals against DR Congo.

Facing Mali, Seko Fofana struck a shot that Diakité deflected with a backheel to score the goal (2-1, 120th+3 minute). It was an incredible scenario for the Elephants, playing with fewer players, who clinched victory in the last second.

On that day, Seko Fofana healed old wounds among Ivorians. “It’s all over now, it’s behind us. We have forgiven him for snubbing the team a bit in the past,” explained journalist Choilio Diomandé to AFP, who covers the Ivorian national team for Abidjan Sports magazine.

“Today,” he added, “we couldn’t accept Ivory Coast playing without Seko Fofana. He’s the midfield boss, the leader, scoring both goals against Mali (2-1 a.e.t. in the quarter-finals), through shots and inspirations,” continued the journalist.
