In the race to host the final of the 2030 World Cup, which will take place in Spain, Morocco, and Portugal, speculation about Morocco’s chances seems to be growing, fueled by various scandals, including corruption, hitting the Spanish Royal Football Federation (FREF). Spain has been eager to clarify its position.

Speaking on COPE radio, Fernando Sanz, a member of the organizing committee for the 2030 World Cup, first dispelled rumors of a possible withdrawal of Spain’s co-organization of the tournament.

“We are currently working on finalizing a dossier to be submitted to FIFA by the end of July. There is no chance they will take it away from us,” Sanz emphasized. “No one else can bid for the organization because the conditions are still met. It is a very professional and perfect job being done in harmony with Morocco and Portugal.”

Addressing potential external competitors, the 50-year-old then turned to internal competition for hosting the final, coveted by Morocco, which he somewhat dismissed.

“I understand they have this desire, just like us. Fifteen sites in thirteen cities have applied. If someone does not meet the conditions, they are excluded. Morocco does not have the same weight as us. We have eleven sites, while Morocco has six and Portugal, three,” the executive said. The former Real Madrid and Malaga defender thus seeks to highlight the difference in organizational capabilities, all while presenting factual data. With these remarks, he might not make many friends in Morocco…
