The future of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to be held in Morocco in 2025 appears uncertain as major concerns regarding the state of the Moroccan stadiums’ pitches emerge. This situation could lead to a potential cancellation of the event for that year, with a postponement to 2026 being considered.

The stadiums set to host the competition’s matches currently face serious issues in terms of pitch quality, complicating the hosting of matches under optimal conditions. The necessary work to address these deficiencies could prove to be a lengthy endeavor, thus pushing back the initially planned timelines for the event.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had awarded the organization of AFCON 2025 to Morocco after Algeria withdrew from the race. In an effort to support Morocco’s bid for hosting future sports events, CAF even encouraged the withdrawal of other bids, thereby allowing Morocco to emerge as the sole contender.

However, despite this expressed desire to entrust the event to Morocco, the current structural problems raise doubts about the feasibility of maintaining AFCON in 2025. A decision on the future of the competition will need to be made in the coming months, with a possible postponement to 2026 to allow for the completion of necessary works and ensure the success of the event.
