Good news for Senegalese supporters arrested in Morocco

While a group is organizing a protest march today in Dakar to demand the release of Senegalese supporters detained in Morocco, new information is starting to emerge about their situation and the ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Found guilty of “hooliganism” after the CAN final on January 18, the supporters were sentenced last Thursday to prison terms ranging from three months to one year. The defense calls this verdict a “mock trial.” Through their lawyer, Me Patrick Kabou, the detainees now consider themselves “hostages.”

According to Libération, the prisoners have been split into two groups and transferred to the El Arjat 1 and El Arjat 2 prisons near Rabat. Despite the psychological shock, they are “holding on” and no inhumane treatment has been inflicted on them, contrary to some rumors.

They receive regular consular support, including frequent visits from the Senegalese consul in Casablanca. The Moroccan Human Rights Commission has also taken charge of the case to ensure their rights are respected.

Having not appealed, the supporters are now placing their hopes in diplomatic channels. A royal pardon could be considered during the celebrations marking the end of Ramadan, as Libération notes. Additionally, the Senegalese state has announced financial support to assist the families of the detainees.
