Having tried everything to integrate him into their team, Morocco failed to convince Lamine Yamal, who is now shining with Spain at Euro 2024.
Lamine Yamal, a 16-year-old prodigy playing for FC Barcelona, is currently excelling with the Spanish national team at the Euros. Yet, his participation in this competition could have never materialized.
Of Moroccan descent through his father, Yamal was long courted by the Lions of the Atlas. According to Revelo, Morocco engaged in numerous discussions with the young player and his father in hopes of convincing him to join their ranks.
Despite these persistent solicitations, it was ultimately Albert Luque, then director of the Spanish national team, who succeeded in enrolling the young talent. Unlike his father, Lamine Yamal quickly expressed his desire to represent La Roja, having already climbed through all levels of the Spanish youth teams. He even reportedly told Luque, “Albert, rest assured, I want to win the next Euros, and I can only do that with Spain.”
To achieve this dream, Lamine Yamal and his teammates must first overcome the German hurdle in the Euro quarter-finals this Friday in Stuttgart. The outcome of this match could well determine whether the young starlet will fulfill his ambition to triumph with Spain on the European stage.
