A Moroccan international player was hospitalized after being assaulted in a bar, his club announced on Monday.
On Saturday, following his team’s draw without him (he was left on the bench) against Hanover, in the 31st round of the 2. Bundesliga (Germany’s second division), Aymen Barkok was attacked in a Berlin bar. This was revealed by Hertha Berlin on Monday through their official X account (formerly Twitter).
“The club was horrified to learn yesterday (Sunday) that Aymen Barkok was assaulted in a Berlin bar on Saturday night and had to be taken to the hospital for facial injuries.
Aymen underwent successful surgery on Sunday but will be unavailable for the team until he recovers,” the statement read. It’s likely that the season is over for the 25-year-old attacking midfielder. Loaned to the Old Lady in mid-January until June 30, he is expected to return to Mainz, currently in the relegation playoff position in the Bundesliga with three matches remaining.

Never called up by Regragui Barkok has appeared in 13 matches for Hertha, starting in 10 of them, and has scored one goal. Born in Frankfurt to Moroccan parents, the versatile midfielder represented Germany in youth selections up to the U21s (earning a single cap in September 2017) before ultimately choosing to play for his ancestral country.
Making his debut for the Lions of the Atlas on October 9, 2010, against Senegal (3-1), he has since earned 18 caps (1 goal). His most recent appearance was under Vahid Halilhodzic, specifically on June 9, 2022 (a 2-1 victory against South Africa). In other words, he has never been called up by Walid Regragui, who arrived in August of the same year.
