A surprising development has emerged: the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) scheduled to take place in Morocco might be postponed at the request of the CAF.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has officially requested the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the 12th edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), originally scheduled for this summer in Morocco. The request for postponement highlights the organizational hurdles that CAF tournaments have recently faced. Despite attempts to coordinate schedules with major international events by African officials, disagreements persist. The scheduling of the 2024 women’s AFCON is threatened by these circumstances, making a postponement increasingly plausible.

Thunderclap: AFCON to be held in Morocco postponed?

Complications arise with the qualification of four nations for the women’s AFCON at the Olympic Games. Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia, who are set to participate in the continental competition, are also entered in the Olympics. In light of this, the CAF is seriously considering a postponement to facilitate broader team participation and maintain the integrity of the competition. Despite suggestions for new dates for this year, none seem suitable. Therefore, postponing the 12th edition of the women’s AFCON to the following year appears to be an increasingly likely solution to ensure its success and the full participation of qualified teams.
