On March 11, 2025, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle unveiled his final 23-man squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Notably, former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa is not included.
The Nigerian national team will face their counterparts Rwanda and Zimbabwe on March 21 and 25, 2025, respectively, in Matchdays 5 and 6 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
For the occasion, coach Eric Chelle called up all the key players in the Super Eagles squad, including Ola Aina, captain William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Raphael Onyedika, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Tolu Arokodare, and Victor Boniface.
The coach has left out Ahmed Musa, Nigeria’s former captain and most-capped player. This isn’t entirely surprising, as it’s been a while since he was last called up by Sekou Chelle’s predecessors. His last appearance for the Super Eagles was in February 2024, but his last appearance for Nigeria was on March 27, 2023, against Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. While his fans are up in arms about his absence, Ahmed Musa doesn’t seem upset by his non-call-up.
“The team is one and any player called to join the Super Eagles must give his best. I fully support the team and will encourage them to win these World Cup qualifying matches,” Musa said.
