José Peseiro left his position in February after the expiration of his contract, with reports suggesting he was considering offers from Algeria and some other African countries.

However, this week, Nigerian Minister of Sports, John Enoh, reportedly held discussions with the former Super Eagles head coach regarding a potential return to the team.

Recall that the Portuguese tactician led the Super Eagles to a second-place finish in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, despite facing heavy criticism prior to the tournament.

They were inches away from clinching the trophy, but the host country put up a tough fight.

According to Complete Sports Nigeria, the Minister of Sports has made contact with representatives of the Portuguese coach.

Both parties are open to the idea of the former Saudi Arabia and Venezuela coach returning to this position. “It is true that the Minister of Sports is in talks with José Peseiro about his potential return to the Super Eagles,” a source told the newspaper.

“The man is willing to come back, let’s wait and see what will happen by the end of the day,” the source added.

The technical committee has reportedly shortlisted three coaches for the position, which, according to the Minister of Sports, is expected to be filled for the Super Eagles within the next two weeks.

The Super Eagles are set to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana and the Republic of Benin’s Squirrels in a FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification match in June next.
