The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) has finally announced its new head coach, two months after José Peseiro’s departure.

The suspense is over. In a statement, the NFF announced its new head coach this Monday. The chosen one is none other than the former interim coach Finidi George, who led the Super Eagles in March to a mixed record (a 2-1 victory against Ghana, the first in 18 years, followed by a 2-0 defeat against Mali).

“The board of the Nigerian Football Federation approved on Monday the recommendation of its technical and development committee to appoint former elite winger Finidi George as the head coach of the national men’s football team, the Super Eagles,” reads the official website of the organization.

George’s First Mission

The former Nigerian international was strongly tipped in mid-April before rumors surfaced naming his compatriot Emmanuel Amunike as the top contender to succeed José Peseiro. In the end, it didn’t materialize. A choice from the early stages of former NFF president Amaju Pinnick, who had suggested him to Musa Gusau, George’s task is to improve the African runners-up, particularly with an attacking style of play.

This will start with the upcoming World Cup 2026 qualifiers in June, already crucial as the Super Eagles sit third in their group, two points behind the directly qualifying first place. “George’s immediate task will be to lead the Super Eagles to victory in two FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification matches against South Africa and the Republic of Benin, respectively in Uyo and Abidjan, in just over five weeks,” warned the NFF, without specifying the duration of his contract.
