Portuguese coach José Peseiro has formally announced the conclusion of his tenure as head of the Nigerian national team.

Backing up his words with actions, the 63-year-old tactician had previously stated that he would make a decision regarding a possible extension with the Super Eagles at the expiration of his contract on February 29th. Initially unpopular before the 2023 AFCON, the former Al Ahly coach managed to turn the tide in his favor by leading Victor Osimhen and his teammates to the tournament final on February 11th. This Friday, he finally spoke out… choosing to leave his position on a high note. End of the road for Peseiro

“Yesterday (Thursday), our collaboration with the NFF (Nigerian Football Federation) officially came to an end,” he announced on his X account (formerly known as Twitter). “Leading the Super Eagles has been a source of pride and immense honor. These past 22 months have been marked by total commitment, sacrifices, a lot of emotions, and overflowing enthusiasm. We feel a deep sense of accomplishment.

We want to express our profound gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who recruited me), president Ibrahim Gusau, secretary general Mohammed Sanusi, secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, the entire staff, and, most importantly, to all the PLAYERS, with whom we have had a lot of fun working,” he added. He ended by saying: “Guys, we are deeply grateful. Being a part of this family has been a privilege.

We will miss you, but know that we will always be here to support you, wherever you are. Sending you all a big hug.” Arriving in the position in May 2022, Peseiro was in charge for 22 matches, recording 11 wins, 4 draws, and 7 losses. With, according to his words, six offers under consideration, his future looks promising, although he will not be heading to Algeria, despite the latter’s sustained interest in recent times.
