In the eternal problem of racism in Spanish football, a very surprising decision has been made regarding the Vinicius case.
Racism in Spanish stadiums has become a recurring problem, particularly in top-flight football. One of the most notable episodes in recent years occurred during the El Clasico on October 28, 2023, between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc. After Madrid’s 1-2 victory, a video circulated showing a Barcelona supporter hurling racist insults at Vinicius Jr., Real Madrid’s Brazilian winger. The fan notably called him a “monkey,” one of the most discriminatory insults against the player.
The incident prompted Barça to announce an internal investigation, stating that it upheld the values of respect and integrity in sport. The video echoed a similar incident that occurred a few days earlier in Seville, where a fan mimed a monkey gesture toward Vinicius. In the face of this pattern of racist behavior, Vinicius called on the authorities to take concrete measures to change the legislation and effectively combat these acts of discrimination.
