Ahead of his big return to the boxing ring, Anthony Joshua opened up in an interview with Sky Sports. The Brit compared himself to Francis Ngannou.
Anthony Joshua’s goal is clear: to become heavyweight boxing world champion for the third time. The Briton will be back in the ring on Saturday night, on a card that will also feature Deontay Wilder (find out the full card and how to watch the event here). Elsewhere, a big-budget trailer has been released to promote the evening. AJ’ will face Otto Wallin, a Swedish boxer with 26 wins and 1 loss. His only career loss came against WBC champion Tyson Fury. A fine challenge for Anthony Joshua, who has a record of 26 wins, including 23 by KO, and 3 defeats.
Anthony Joshua wants to become champion again
Anthony Joshua lost his WBA, WBO and IBF belts in June 2019. He was knocked out by Andy Ruiz. In December of the same year, ‘AJ’ regained his place on the throne by beating the Mexican by unanimous decision. However, in September 2021, Joshua lost by decision to Oleksandr Usyk, before suffering the same fate in the rematch. Since then, he has been looking to become king again.
Ahead of the event, Anthony Joshua spoke to Sky Sports. He explained that his ultimate goal is to become a three-time world champion.
“My goal is to become a three-time world heavyweight champion. But it’s also about becoming a dominant fighter, a better fighter. If I get in the ring, dominate and am better than my opponent, the championship will naturally be around my waist. Because I’m simply better. I’m destined for that.”
Anthony Joshua compares himself to Francis Ngannou
If Joshua and Wilder win on Saturday night, they will meet in a Super Fight on 9 March in Saudi Arabia. Indeed, the two parties have reportedly reached an agreement. As a result, ‘AJ’ could beat a big name in the division, and get another title shot… Why not against Tyson Fury? The latter is coming off a controversial victory over former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. The Cameroonian sent the Briton to the mat (see the fight summary).
“Imagine what I’d do to Tyson Fury,” said Joshua, “Believe me, you know what I’m saying. You know what I’m saying. You know what’s going on, I’ve seen it. I know.”
Although a super fight against Wilder is on the cards, Anthony Joshua remains focused on Otto Wallin: “I can’t talk about it. I feel like it’s going to distract me. I’m just trying to stay focused. I’m not even going to let that thought enter my mind. But I think you’d know where I’m going if I win this fight. Right now, I’m focused on winning this fight.”
Only two days to go until ‘Day of Reckoning’.
