All eyes were on the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Friday 15 November to witness the long-awaited return of Mike Tyson to the ring. Up against Internet sensation Jake Paul, the former world heavyweight champion promised a spectacular clash. But it wasn’t just Tyson’s performance that was the highlight of the evening: an unexpected moment, captured by Netflix’s backstage cameras, triggered a wave of reactions on social networks.

During the live broadcast on Netflix, viewers witnessed a scene that was supposed to show an intimate and “healthy” moment between Mike Tyson and his son. The boxing legend was chatting to his son in his dressing room during an interview just hours before the high-profile fight.

However, not everything went according to plan. When he stepped away from the camera, Tyson accidentally offered a moment that many are calling shameful. The legend can be seen with his knickers completely ripped off the back. The furtive moment quickly caught fire on social networks, where screenshots and amusing comments abounded.

A clumsiness that made the rounds

The online community was quick to react. Thousands of tweets and posts highlighted this unexpected incident. Some fans even poked fun at the situation, while others criticised Netflix for not having better controlled the live feed.  This is not the first time that Netflix has been criticised for its sports broadcasts. On the same evening, many subscribers reported technical problems, including interruptions during the much-anticipated fight between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano.

Despite this embarrassing moment, Mike Tyson remained focused and true to form. Before the fight, he had promised a “vicious victory” over Jake Paul to show his determination and his desire to prove that he is still a force to be reckoned with, even at 57.  But unfortunately Iron Tyson was no match for the 27-year-old, who won the fight by split decision.
