Russell Westbrook makes NBA history

A few weeks ago, Russell Westbrook distinguished himself by asking to be benched to facilitate the integration of new recruit James Harden. Often described by those who have worked with him as a model team-mate, the veteran point guard sacrificed his starting berth. Although he scored fewer points than in previous years – 11.4 points per game on average in 2023-24 – Westbrook managed to climb into the top 25 all-time scorers on Monday night.

During the first quarter of Monday night’s game between the LA Clippers and the Miami Heat, star point guard Russell Westbrook made history by moving into 25th place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. With this, Westbrook joins LeBron James and Oscar Robertson as the only three players in NBA history to appear in the top 25 in points and the top 10 in assists.

An irreproachable player

This is a major achievement for Westbrook, who holds several different NBA records. With three single-season titles for best passer and two for best scorer, Westbrook is undoubtedly one of the best playmakers of all time, and this latest achievement shows it. As well as being able to put his ego aside for the good of the team, he is still capable of scoring and playing at a high level. Westbrook gives the Clippers a unique dynamic coming off the bench.

Russell Westbrook with a sense of duty

What’s more, prior to Monday night’s game against Miami, Westbrook was 5th among all point guards in rebounds taken per game this season, while being only 76th in minutes played. “I want people who come to the game to understand that it doesn’t really matter whether I play five or twenty minutes. When I’m on the pitch, I make sure I’m competitive and give everything I’ve got. I know that my duty is to give my all every night and to make sure that the people who come to the match appreciate the time I spend on the pitch,” he said in mid-December.
