On Thursday, April 4, 2024, FIFA unveiled the updated ranking of national teams, shining a spotlight on the remarkable rise of Ivory Coast in the global football landscape. While attention has often been on traditional African football powers such as Senegal, Nigeria, or Egypt, it’s now Ivory Coast that garners attention with its rapid ascent.

Despite dropping one spot globally to Colombia, Morocco maintains its position as the leader in Africa, ranking 13th globally with a total of 1663.39 FIFA points. Senegal closely follows, climbing to 17th place with 1620.74 points, followed by Nigeria in 30th place with 1522.26 points, and Egypt in 37th place with 1500.38 points. However, it’s Ivory Coast that surprises by landing in 38th place globally with 1494.57 points, a performance showcasing the steady rise of Ivorian football. This surge can be attributed to the concerted efforts of players, coaches, and football authorities in Ivory Coast to develop and promote the sport at all levels.

Ivory Coast has moved up by one spot, surpassing footballing nations like Turkey, Tunisia, Algeria, and even Erling Haaland’s Norway. By overtaking traditionally dominant nations such as Tunisia (41st place), Algeria (43rd place), and Cameroon (51st place), Ivory Coast demonstrates its determination to establish itself as a major force on both the African and international football scenes.
