“In my opinion, Mourinho and Guardiola are incomparable. One (Mourinho) won the Champions League with Porto, a remarkable feat, while the other (Guardiola) couldn’t win it with Bayern,” Samuel Eto’o had stated.
These remarks resonate with the complex relationship between Eto’o and Guardiola, characterized by tensions despite a historic season. In 2008, when Guardiola took over as head coach of FC Barcelona, he planned a major overhaul of the squad. Eto’o, despite being one of the best strikers in the world, was included on the list of players to leave. Guardiola viewed him as a potentially disruptive influence in the dressing room.
Nevertheless, Eto’o stayed at the club and delivered an outstanding season, scoring 36 goals in all competitions and playing a pivotal role in Barça’s historic treble (La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League). Despite this success, their personal relationship remained distant. Eto’o criticized Guardiola for his lack of direct communication: “He didn’t have the courage to speak to me. He used intermediaries instead.”
In the summer of 2009, Guardiola remained steadfast in his decision and pushed for Eto’o’s departure. The striker was traded to Inter Milan in exchange for Zlatan Ibrahimović, a move the Cameroonian has always considered unfair.
Over the years, Eto’o has not hesitated to criticize Guardiola, asserting that the coach did not wield the influence he claimed, especially when compared to Lionel Messi’s impact or his own importance on the pitch. For his part, Guardiola has consistently acknowledged Eto’o’s crucial contribution during the 2008-2009 season.
Despite their differences, their collaboration delivered one of the most legendary seasons in FC Barcelona’s history, highlighting the paradox of collective success driven by two irreconcilable personalities.
