Real Madrid has become a prime target for the powerful forces of Saudi football, with several of its stars catching their attention. In addition to Luka Modric and Vinicius Jr., goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is now among the players sought after by Saudi Arabia.
Last summer, Saudi Arabia made its ambitions clear by attempting to recruit Vinicius Jr., offering the Brazilian international a staggering €200 million per year on a five-year contract. However, the Brazilian star chose to remain loyal to Real Madrid, reaffirming his commitment to the Madrid-based club.
Determined to continue strengthening its league, Saudi Arabia has now set its sights on Thibaut Courtois, making him a priority target for next summer. According to the Spanish daily Marca, the Belgian goalkeeper has reportedly been approached by the Saudis in the past, and another attempt could be made during the upcoming summer transfer window.
A Major Obstacle for Saudi Arabia in the Courtois Case
Real Madrid won’t let go of Thibaut Courtois easily. The Belgian goalkeeper is under contract with the club until 2026, giving the Spanish giants a strong negotiating position. Moreover, Courtois is a cornerstone of Real Madrid’s recent successes, making his departure highly unlikely unless an absolutely extraordinary offer is made.
Saudi Arabia’s ambitions to elevate its football league, however, remain immense. After hosting the Spanish Super Cup and with plans such as organizing the 2027 Asian Cup and the 2030 World Cup, Saudi Arabia is determined to attract top players to raise the level of its football.
