Thunderbolt: Senegal’s exclusion from AFCON 2027? CAF makes the call!

As the fallout from the controversial final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations continues to be felt, attention now turns to the future, particularly the next edition set for 2027. In this context, several questions arise regarding the regulatory consequences for Senegal, in light of the existing rules from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to Article 59 of the CAF regulations, specific measures can be applied in cases of disqualification or serious sanctions following a competition. This framework includes the possibility of confiscating equipment and conducting thorough disciplinary reviews after decisions from appeal bodies. However, these provisions remain open to interpretation and practical application by the relevant authorities, depending on the specific circumstances of the case.

For Senegal, the situation is still evolving. The CAF appeal jury’s decision to award the title to Morocco is not necessarily the final step in the legal process. The Senegalese Football Federation has indeed appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), meaning the final consequences, including any potential disqualification, will depend on the final verdict from this international body.

Thus, the strict application of Article 59 can only occur once all procedures are exhausted. As long as the CAS has not ruled, no additional sanctions can be considered as definitively established. This particularly concerns Senegal’s future participation and any potential logistical and administrative restrictions.

As of now, there is no indication that Senegal would be excluded from the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for 2027 and co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Unless stated otherwise by the relevant authorities, the Lions of Teranga should participate in the competition, provided they qualify. Key players from the squad, like Sadio Mané, could be present, showcasing continuity despite the current turbulence.

Article 59 of the CAF regulations is part of a discipline framework aimed at preserving the integrity of competitions. Its application relies on a rigorous analysis of the facts, responsibilities, and decisions made by the various jurisdictions. In such cases, CAF typically acts in coordination with its disciplinary bodies and appeal jurisdictions, while respecting international procedures. Any sanction must therefore be legally grounded, proportionate, and in line with the principles of sports law, especially when an appeal is brought before the CAS.
