Beye or Hervé Renard for Senegal: an announcement is coming

Senegal’s exit in the Round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup against Belgium (3-2) has sparked a wave of criticism aimed at the coaching staff led by Pape Thiaw. With qualification for the quarter-finals seeming within reach, the final minutes of the match turned against the Lions, reigniting questions about match management and tactical choices. In the days that followed, some fans expressed their dissatisfaction, calling for changes at the helm of the national team.

The situation intensified with the statement from midfielder Pape Gueye, whose words left a mark: “I announce today that, as long as this coaching staff is in place, I will take a break from the national team.” This declaration quickly circulated and fueled the debate about the group’s cohesion. It comes in an already tense context, where the performances and choices of the staff are closely scrutinized by the public and observers of Senegalese football.

Habib Beye or Hervé Renard for Senegal: an announcement drops

On social media, several potential successors have emerged, including Habib Beye. Some fans believe he is a solid option, given his knowledge of Senegalese football and his background as a former international. Among the comments shared online, one reads: “Habib, come take on all the challenges with this beautiful dream team of the Lions of Teranga that needs a top-level coach.” Others add: “For the coaching position (…) I support Habib Beye. Firstly, he is Senegalese. Out of patriotism, but also because he knows the country, the culture, and the expectations of the people.”

The name Hervé Renard also keeps coming up among the options discussed by fans. His international experience and previous successes in Africa are frequently highlighted. Several messages posted online illustrate this enthusiasm: “I believe the long-awaited moment has arrived. Everyone agrees he is the ideal replacement for Pape Thiaw.” or “I vote for Hervé Renard.” Some even say: “We must do everything to recruit Hervé Renard as coach, no matter the cost (…).”

However, another segment of the public calls for caution and refuses to engage in this immediate succession debate. A critical opinion is also circulating: “Anything but Hervé Renard and Habib Beye. Hervé Renard, aside from his AFCON win with Zambia, hasn’t proven anything since. Habib is just a good talker, a simple football analyst, that’s all.” In this contrasting context, the Senegalese Football Federation will have to decide on Pape Thiaw’s future and define the direction for the national sports project.
