Pape Thiaw expected better: the Lions’ disappointments against Saudi Arabia

Senegal – Saudi Arabia (0-0): These Lions Who Disappointed Pape Thiaw Before Upcoming Challenges

Senegal wrapped up their preparations with a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia (0-0), a result that raises several questions ahead of upcoming competitions. While the Senegalese defense showed some solidity, many key offensive players and playmakers fell short of expectations, worrying national coach Pape Thiaw.

Against a well-organized Saudi team, the Lions lacked inspiration in the final third. Despite efforts from players like Pathé Ciss and Ismaïla Sarr, the attacking play was insufficient throughout the match.

In midfield, Lamine Camara had a tough night. After a lackluster performance against the United States, the AS Monaco player was expected to lead Senegal’s play. However, he struggled to impose his rhythm or truly influence the game. Rarely involved in build-up play and often absent in key spaces, he found it hard to support his attacking teammates. A slightly better second half couldn’t erase an overall disappointing display.

The same goes for Iliman Ndiaye. Normally able to make a difference with his technique and creativity, the forward was very quiet. He was not involved in the game, lost many balls, and hardly troubled the opposing defense. His lack of offensive impact highlighted the difficulties the Lions faced in posing a threat.

Up front, Sadio Mané failed to step up as the leader. The Al-Nassr FC forward went through the match without creating any real chances. Lacking inspiration in his choices and imprecise in his ball control, he had a night far below his usual standards.

Substituted in during the match, Nicolas Jackson didn’t convince either. After missing a clear chance from an Ismaïla Sarr assist, the forward was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in just a few minutes. A frustrating end to the match that summed up a performance marked by a lack of efficiency and control.

While Senegal can take comfort in their defensive discipline and the reassuring performance of goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, the displays of several key offensive players are a real concern. With upcoming challenges on the horizon, Pape Thiaw will be looking for a response from his star players to bring more creativity, effectiveness, and personality back to Senegal’s game.
