Senegal: Assane Diao, it’s confirmed!

Injured in December 2025, Assane Diao could finally return to the pitch this weekend. The Senegalese forward is expected to be included in the Como 1907 squad for the match against US Lecce this Saturday.

At just 20 years old, Assane Diao can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Nearly nine months after his hamstring injury, the young Senegal international is set to rejoin the professional squad. His coach Cesc Fàbregas confirmed the news at a press conference: “Diao is rejoining the team tomorrow. He can play, but not start. We have to be very careful with him.”

On December 15, 2025, during a match against AS Roma (a 1-0 loss) in the 15th round of Serie A, the forward injured his right hamstring. It was the worst possible timing, as he had just been called up by Pape Thiaw to play in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. Forced to withdraw, the Ndongane native caused a wave of disappointment back home.

The management of his situation within the Senegal national team sparked debate. Some pointed fingers at Cesc Fàbregas, claiming the former FC Barcelona and Arsenal player didn’t take enough care of his player, especially in his comments surrounding the call-up.

Initially expected to return after six weeks, Diao’s recovery ended up taking longer. Since April 2025, he has only played seven matches, stalling what was a promising progression.

His return is fantastic news for Como, who are in the race for European spots and ambitious about qualifying for the Champions League. With Jayden Adda injured, the Senegalese forward could gradually regain playing time as the season winds down.

For the national team, a return during the international break in March seems premature, with friendlies against Peru (March 28 at Stade de France) and Gambia (March 31 at Stade Abdoulaye-Wade) on the horizon. The main goal now is the 2026 World Cup, kicking off on June 11. His performances in the coming weeks, and especially his ability to stay injury-free, will be crucial for a spot on the Lions’ roster.
