Tottenham is no longer interested: it’s over for Pape Matar

The future of Pape Matar Sarr at Tottenham looks increasingly uncertain as the 2026-2027 season approaches. After two seasons marked by fierce competition in midfield, the Senegal international may be on the move. With the Spurs undergoing a major squad overhaul under their new coach, Roberto De Zerbi, several players are being urged to consider their futures. The Lions midfielder is among those whose departure is now seriously being contemplated.

Despite regularly featuring in Tottenham’s rotations, Pape Matar Sarr has never managed to establish himself as an undisputed starter. Last season, he played 37 matches across all competitions, with 22 as a starter. Those are respectable stats, but they mainly reflect a role as a supporting player rather than a key figure in the team. In the Premier League, the Senegalese only started 13 of the 26 matches he participated in, confirming his inconsistent usage throughout the season.

This situation could speed up his exit. The London club’s management wants to reshape their squad to meet Roberto De Zerbi’s tactical demands. The Italian coach aims to build a team capable of playing a possession-based game, with clean build-ups from the back and strong technical mobility in midfield. In this context, some profiles may no longer fit into the club’s plans.

The announced arrivals of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali highlight this desire to significantly strengthen the midfield. These two signings are expected to increase competition in an already well-stocked area. Meanwhile, Tottenham has reportedly informed several players that they are allowed to explore offers that may come during the transfer window. Pape Matar Sarr is among those players, along with young Swede Lucas Bergvall.

However, the Senegalese midfielder still has many assets. At just 23 years old, he has plenty of room for growth. His ability to cover a lot of ground, his impact in recovery, his work rate, and his physical strength make him a particularly valued player in the English league. His knack for contributing to both defensive duties and offensive transitions remains one of his main qualities.

However, several British media outlets believe his profile fits less with the playing principles that Roberto De Zerbi wants to implement. Since taking over at Tottenham, the Italian coach has only started him once in his first seven matches. This statistic fuels speculation about his future and suggests that the Senegalese does not constitute a priority in the Spurs’ new sporting project.

“I believe he will be transferred,” said John Wenham, a journalist from Tottenham News, discussing the possibility of the Senegalese midfielder’s departure. According to him, Tottenham could hope to recover a significant fee, estimated at nearly £25 million, or about 19.2 billion CFA francs. Such an amount reflects the player’s value in the transfer market.

Several clubs are already closely monitoring his progress. Brentford is among the teams interested in his profile. The London club is looking for a midfielder who can bring physical impact, intensity, and balance to the midfield. A departure would give Pape Matar Sarr the chance to revive his career in an environment where he could enjoy more playing time and continue his development at the highest level.
