The Senegal national team players recently took part in a fun and unique activity, trying their hand at basketball alongside former NBA international Gorgui Dieng. This session, held in a relaxed setting away from their sporting obligations, helped strengthen team cohesion while exploring another physically and technically demanding discipline.

Gorgui Dieng, a former center who played in the prestigious North American league with teams like the San Antonio Spurs and the Minnesota Timberwolves, shared his high-level experience with the Senegalese players. Used to the demands of professional basketball, he guided the Lions through the basics of the game, emphasizing coordination, spatial awareness, quick execution, and precision in movements.

The activity kicked off with a tailored warm-up, allowing players to get familiar with the specific movements of basketball. Under Gorgui Dieng’s supervision, participants were then divided into small groups to work on fundamentals: dribbling, passing, shooting, and off-ball movement. The goal wasn’t performance, but learning and discovering a sport different from their main discipline.

Senegalese players, used to high-level football, quickly showed a keen interest in this new exercise. Some displayed surprising skill with the orange ball, while others had to adapt to a faster pace and specific rules. Gorgui Dieng’s guidance helped correct their movements and provided precise technical advice drawn from his NBA experience.

Beyond the sporting aspect, this initiative also strengthened the bonds among the team members. The exchanges, laughter, and friendly competition created a relaxed atmosphere, far from the usual pressure of official matches. Such activities are often used by coaching staff to promote group cohesion and improve communication among players.

Gorgui Dieng, deeply involved in the development of sports in Senegal, praised the commitment and curiosity of the Senegalese internationals. According to him, this type of exercise not only helps discover new skills but also develops transferable qualities like agility, focus, and quick decision-making.

At the end of the session, a friendly match was organized, providing a moment of entertainment and healthy competition. Although football instincts sometimes took over, the players fully enjoyed this unique experience.

This initiative once again highlights the importance of cross-training activities in high-level sports, where mental preparation and collective cohesion play as crucial a role as technical training.
