Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are engaged in a cold war over the 23-year-old Canadian full-back. A new twist now favors the Madrid club.

Alphonso Davies is currently competing in the Copa America with Canada, set to play in the semifinals against Argentina on July 15, but the focus in Europe is on which jersey he will wear next season. Real Madrid remains openly interested in the left-back, who is under contract with Bayern until June 30, 2025.

In recent months, various options have been considered in this matter, from extending with Bayern to leaving as a free agent next year. According to the German outlet Kicker, there is now a possibility that Davies could join Madrid this summer, with the player seemingly testing Bayern’s patience to facilitate his transfer, even if it means competing with the solid Ferland Mendy.

To date, Davies has rejected recent contract renewal offers from Bayern, reportedly prompting the club to withdraw its lucrative salary offer (€16 million). In Germany, Davies is now seen as a former Bayern player.

A departure this summer?

According to Kicker, Bayern’s board has come to terms with the likelihood of Davies leaving, given his consistent refusals to extend his contract. The German media suggests that it would be logical for Davies to depart Bayern Munich before the start of the 2024-25 season, rather than risk losing him as a free agent next year, as previously considered.

Real Madrid is keen on Davies but not at any cost. Bayern is asking for between €50 million and €60 million for the Canadian, a sum that Real Madrid is reluctant to pay for a player who could be available for free next year. An agreement around €30 million would be more suitable for the Spanish club.

The standoff between the two clubs is likely to continue throughout the summer, a chess match in which President Florentino Perez of Real Madrid is well-versed, and Bayern Munich is keenly aware of this dynamic.
