Gianni Infantino’s statements have sent shockwaves through the sports world. By claiming that the exclusion of Russia “has brought nothing” and advocating for its reintegration into international competitions, the FIFA president is reopening a debate that is as sensitive as it is explosive, at the crossroads of football, geopolitical conflict, and moral responsibility. This stance is provoking outrage in Ukraine and deeply dividing global sports opinion.
These comments could deeply split the sports community. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has expressed a desire to lift the ban on Russia participating in international competitions, which has been in place for four years, arguing that it has “brought nothing.” Russian clubs and the national team have been suspended from FIFA and UEFA tournaments since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“This suspension has brought nothing, it has only increased frustration and hatred,” Gianni Infantino told Sky Sports. “Allowing Russian boys and girls to play football in other parts of Europe would help.” The 55-year-old leader also stated that FIFA should “never actually ban a country from playing football because of the actions of its political leaders,” adding, “Someone has to maintain the links.”
Ukraine condemns “irresponsible” remarks
Ukrainian Sports Minister Matvii Bidnyi reacted strongly, calling these statements “irresponsible” and “childish.” “They disconnect football from the reality in which children are being killed,” he told Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin maintained that the war in Ukraine must end before considering Russia’s reintegration, reiterating the position expressed during the closing press conference of the UEFA congress last April.
Gianni Infantino also defended FIFA’s decision to award a “peace prize” to American President Donald Trump during the draw for the 2026 World Cup.
“We must do everything in our power to contribute to peace in the world, and that’s why we have been thinking for some time about doing something to reward those who act,” he said. “Objectively, he deserves it.”
