CAF: the dreaded announcement for the 2027 AFCON has arrived

On the eve of the Executive Committee (Comex) meeting of the African Football Confederation (CAF), scheduled for this Friday in Dar es Salaam, a significant rumor is circulating in the corridors of African football: a possible postponement of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 to 2028.

According to several sources close to the matter, this shift aims to sustainably reorganize the competition’s calendar, establishing a four-year rhythm similar to the Euro or Copa América. If this direction is confirmed, the 2028 edition would mark the start of this new cycle, while keeping East Africa as the host region.

The trio of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, initially designated to host AFCON 2027, would thus retain the organization of the tournament. The final decision is expected to be announced after the Comex deliberations. Such a reform, according to several observers, aims to better harmonize the international calendar, provide more visibility to continental competitions, and optimize logistical aspects, infrastructure preparation, and media broadcasting of African tournaments.
