The winds have shifted once again on the Canebière. After a string of poor performances and disappointment in Europe, Olympique de Marseille has ended the Roberto De Zerbi era, following a heavy defeat to PSG (5-0). Could this renewal pave the way for a historic chapter? The OM has never been led by an African coach, and this option, once considered unlikely, now seems more credible than ever. Four candidates stand out.
Habib Beye, the emotional choice
Habib Beye represents a choice that resonates deeply with OM supporters. A former full-back (2003-2007) and a respected captain in the dressing room, the ex-Senegal international knows the unique atmosphere of the Vélodrome inside out. His attachment to the club has never been a secret.
Recently dismissed by Rennes, he brings strong symbolic arguments despite a mixed first experience in Ligue 1. His assertive temperament, often seen as an asset in Marseille, aligns with the local DNA. However, questions remain: his limited experience at the top level and a difficult stint in Brittany, where managing the group proved challenging, understandably raise doubts. According to RMC, OM is looking for a coach familiar with Ligue 1 to finish the season before reassessing the future. Beye is the favorite for the job according to Foot Mercato, fitting this profile.
Éric Chelle, the tactical gamble
Less known in France, Éric Sékou Chelle is a technician whose stock is rising on the African scene. Of Malian origin, he grew up in Martigues, near Marseille, and has an indirect cultural connection with OM, a significant advantage in this club. He started his coaching career at Athlético Marseille (2016-2017) and has reportedly been suggested by intermediaries to succeed De Zerbi, according to Massilia Zone.

His recent work leading Nigeria at the AFCON has boosted his credibility, especially tactically. Although he recently expressed a desire to coach Real Madrid one day, his lack of references in top-level French football and certain dark spots — like Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup — could hinder any potential move. For now, his name seems more like a secondary option than a primary one.
Djamel Belmadi, the Marseille enigma
Every time there’s instability, his name comes up. Djamel Belmadi is deeply tied to the Marseille identity. A former OM player and African champion with Algeria as a coach, he still holds a certain aura.
However, several factors complicate his candidacy: no experience in a European league and a less favorable recent dynamic with Al-Duhail, currently 8th in the Qatari league. His profile often divides opinions, swinging between nostalgia and caution.

Walid Regragui, more rumor than reality
The name Walid Regragui is more of a media fantasy than a genuine option. Charismatic and used to high-pressure environments, the Moroccan coach ticks many boxes in terms of leadership. The timing might seem right, as Regragui recently resigned from his role as Morocco’s coach after losing in the AFCON final, while the Federation has yet to officially decide on his future.
Unlike the other candidates, Regragui has no direct ties to OM, but his former teammate, Medhi Benatia, could serve as a bridge. For now, though, it’s just a rumor without concrete foundation.
Nothing guarantees that OM will take this historic step, but rarely has the idea of an African coach sitting on the Olympian bench seemed so plausible. In Marseille, as always, everything can change in an instant.
