The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has just unveiled the prize money for the 2023 African Cup of Nations. With the sums revised upwards, the countries that make it through to the quarter-finals stand to make a lot of money, with the jackpot going to the champion.

In the run-up to the 2023 African Cup of Nations, which kicks off on 13 January and runs until 11 February, CAF is finalising the final details. The Winner of the TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 will receive USD 7 000 000 reads the CAF press release, which also sets out the prize money for the finalist, semi-finalists and quarter-finalists. “The Runner-up of the TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 will now get USD 4 000 000. Each of the two Semi-finalist will receive USD 2 500 000 and each of the four Quarter-finalist, USD 1 300 000″ the press release continued.

Doubtless satisfied to have made a difference compared to the last edition, played in Cameroon, which went to Senegal, CAF boss Patrice Motsepe is convinced that the sums at stake will benefit the African continent, particularly in terms of development.

CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions. We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money. I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations” he confided in the press release.

A lot of money at stake in Côte d’Ivoire

From nearly 3 billion CFA francs, the budget for the overall winner of the 2023 CAF Africa Cup of Nations has risen to more than 4 billion CFA francs, which is no mean feat. In any case, the increased sum made available to the competition is not to be overlooked, and the 24 countries involved will be doing their utmost to take most of it.
