The news is confirmed: the Senegal team will not change jerseys for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2023.
PUMA, the official kit sponsor, has recently unveiled images of the “Lions” official jersey, confirming the retention of the shirts used during the World Cup in Qatar.
No new jerseys for the Senegal team
In collaboration with the Senegalese Football Federation, PUMA has decided not to create new jerseys for AFCON 2023. This means that the Lions will step onto the field wearing the same white shirts adorned with green, yellow, and red on the chest, as they did during the last World Cup.
The green jerseys, traditionally worn for away matches, will also remain unchanged. This decision emphasizes Senegal’s commitment to maintaining visual continuity, with yellow details in the middle of the shirt recalling the country’s iconic colors. The number and logo of the Senegalese Football Federation appear in a red band, contributing to the distinctive identity of the jersey.
In a context where some teams, like Guinea, have opted for new jerseys for the upcoming competition, Senegal’s choice to keep their existing uniforms reflects an attachment to a strong visual identity and national pride.
Puma and Umbro Controversy for the Senegal Team
“Lions” supporters will have the opportunity to cheer again in the familiar colors of their favorite team during AFCON 2023, strengthening the bond between the Senegalese nation and its national football team.
Regarding the Senegal national team jerseys, controversy arose a few days ago in this regard. While Aliou Cissé had just begun preparations with the first training sessions, Mauritanian journalist Lassana Camara made a revelation about the Senegal team. According to him, the Lions of Teranga have been dressed by the Puma brand for years.
However, photos published by the Senegal team itself show players training with bibs from another sponsor, Umbro, dating back to the 2021 AFCON where the English brand was a partner of CAF. This monumental mistake would have caused a scandal and irritated Puma, Senegal’s kit sponsor. According to the journalist, Puma may take a firm stance on the issue. Is there a connection between this event and the fact that new jerseys were not made for Senegal? Hard to say. In any case, for the “Lions of Teranga,” the essential seems to be elsewhere.
The Senegal Team Towards a Complicated Reconquest
Aliou Cissé and his men are focused on the goal of reclaiming the title. The national coach of Senegal is determined to replicate the monumental feat of the last edition. He is aware that the task will be challenging for his team, and Sadio Mané has not hidden this reality. The star of the Lions of Teranga states that the competition organized by Ivory Coast will be the most competitive, considering the level of all qualified teams.
“We know it won’t be easy, but we’ll be there to do our best and try to advance each round. We expect fierce competition. This competition will be one of the toughest since I’ve been participating because all the major countries are present, and they all have their goals. But we’ll see what happens,” said the Al Nassr forward.
“Senegal is in a group that is not easy, easy for some people who think there are always teams inferior to Senegal. But for me, I wouldn’t say it’s easy. I would say it’s a very tough group because Senegal has two derbies to play in this group against Guinea Conakry and Gambia. We know our relationships, our rapport with Guinea, with Gambia, so it’s going to be very intense,” recently declared Alassane Ndour exclusively on Afrique Sports.
