Following Algeria’s elimination from the 2024 African Cup of Nations, Djamel Belmadi has decided to resign. The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is now looking for a new national coach to replace the former Marseille coach.

Four candidates are currently being considered to succeed Djamel Belmadi, who resigned after Algeria’s failure to qualify for the 2023 African Cup of Nations. The Algerian Football Federation plans to finalise its decision in the coming weeks, to give the future coach enough time to prepare for the national team’s matches in June.

Halilhodzic and Bougherra

Vahid Halilhodzic, who previously coached Algeria from 2011 to 2014, is among the candidates mentioned by the Algerian specialist media. The experienced and respected coach, who previously coached Morocco and Japan, is well known for his excellent results with Algeria at the 2014 World Cup. Currently out of a job, he could devote himself entirely to the national team.

For his part, Madjid Bougherra represents a bolder choice. A former Algerian international defender who played for Glasgow Rangers, Charlton and Qatar, he currently coaches Al-Markhiya. He made a name for himself by winning the Arab Cup of Nations with Les Fennecs in 2021. Bougherra could bring a breath of fresh air and a modern, attacking approach to the Algerian national team.

Hervé Renard and Carlos Queiroz too

Hervé Renard, currently in charge of the French women’s team and winner of the African Cup of Nations on two occasions with Zambia in 2012 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2015, is also a leading candidate for the Algeria job. This pragmatic and effective coach, who has solid experience on the African continent, has also managed Saudi Arabia. However, his commitment to the Paris Olympics makes it difficult for him to take up the post before July.

Carlos Queiroz, former Iran and Portugal coach, is a more surprising option. The former Colombia national team coach could bring an international dimension to the Algerian team, thanks to his experience and vision of football.

Although these are only rumours at the moment, the Algerian Football Federation is expected to make a decision in the coming weeks. The announcement of the new national coach will certainly attract the attention of football fans in Algeria and elsewhere.

I think the team, with 3-4 players more, is the best in Algeria.” […]
