In Algeria, following a disappointing elimination of the national team at the 2023 AFCON, attention is already shifting towards the future. Among the names circulating to take the reins of the national team after Djamel Belmadi’s resignation, that of Habib Bèye, coach of Red Star, emerges strongly.
Habib Bèye, a respected former Senegalese international, has built a solid reputation as a coach, notably through his remarkable work at the helm of Red Star. His team’s performances have attracted attention beyond French borders, and now it is Algeria turning to him to inject new momentum into its national team.
Algeria Seeks a Coach After Its Failed AFCON 2023 Campaign
Djamel Belmadi’s decision to step down after the disappointment of AFCON 2023 has paved the way for a meticulous search for the next coach. Among the names considered, Habib Bèye’s seems to be prominently featured. Algerian media have reported the Algerian Football Federation’s interest in Bèye, highlighting his profile as one of the serious contenders for this prestigious position.
However, despite this media recognition, not all observers seem to be unanimous on Bèye’s choice. While some media outlets like Infosports report his potential involvement in the selection process, others, like DZfoot, have published a list of candidates where his name does not appear. Prestigious names such as Lopetegui, Hervé Renard, Zidane, and Sampaoli are also mentioned in this list, reflecting the diversity of profiles being considered.
This uncertainty about the choice of the next coach of the Algerian national team adds a touch of suspense to the outcome of this transition period. The Fennecs’ supporters eagerly await the announcement of who will lead their team to new heights on the international stage.
Djamel Belmadi Out of AFCON 2023, What’s Next ?
Meanwhile, Habib Bèye continues to focus on his current responsibilities with Red Star, but it is undeniable that his name now resonates beyond French borders, carrying a potential that could well shape the future of football in Africa. The matter is one to watch closely, as the destiny of the Algerian national team seems to rest in the hands of a man whose reputation precedes him.
On Algeria’s side, they are not yet completely separated from Djamel Belmadi. After a six-year collaboration, Djamel Belmadi has left his position as Algeria’s head coach, following a mutual agreement with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), as announced Wednesday by the federation’s president, Walid Sadi.
However, the final details regarding this separation remain to be settled, notably the question of the departure indemnity, revealed by journalist Hafid Derradji. According to information from El Heddaf media, an additional meeting between the two parties was held at the FAF headquarters in Dely Ibrahim, once back in Algiers, to discuss the financial aspects.
While Djamel Belmadi’s staff had accepted the agreed terms the day before, the main interested party reportedly rejected the offer! The winner of the 2019 AFCON is demanding much more than the initially proposed two months’ salary and is insisting on compensation equivalent to the total salary he would have received until the end of his contract in 2026, totaling 1.2 million euros.
Unsurprisingly, Sadi has flatly refused, as he is currently seeking to save money to hire a new internationally renowned coach. Negotiations are therefore at a standstill. Djamel Belmadi has requested a period of reflection to consider a possible revision downward of his demands.
