AFCON 2027: Official Decision from CAF

Amid the various speculations surrounding the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a decision. Meeting this Friday in Dar es Salaam, the executive committee confirmed that the tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

In recent days, rumors suggested a possible postponement to 2028 or even a withdrawal of the East African trio in favor of another host country. The controversy grew after some statements from Kenya hinted at a potential delay, followed by a quick backtrack from the relevant authorities.

At the end of the meeting, CAF President Patrice Motsepe firmly denied these theories. “I don’t want to hear this question anymore,” he stated, dismissing any idea of taking the tournament away from East Africa.

Expressing his “absolute confidence” in the success of the event, he assured that the three host countries have the necessary capabilities to deliver “the best AFCON of all time,” calling for solidarity and trust among African nations.

The competition is scheduled for June-July 2027, marking a return to a summer calendar after several editions held in winter. However, no official decision has been announced yet regarding the 2028 AFCON. Several bids are reportedly under consideration, including those from Morocco, the South Africa-Botswana duo, and Ethiopia.

CAF is thus showing its determination to stay the course and make the 2027 AFCON a major event in African football, focusing on enhanced regional cooperation.
