Since the first African goal scored by Egyptian Abdulrahman Fawzi at the 1934 World Cup, many players from the continent have made their mark in the tournament’s history. Over the years, several African forwards have shone against the world’s best nations and left a lasting legacy.
Asamoah Gyan remains the all-time leading African scorer in World Cup history with six goals. Behind him, Cameroonian legend Roger Milla now shares second place with Senegal’s Ismaïla Sarr, who had a remarkable campaign in 2026. Ahmed Musa stands alone in fourth place, while eight players each have three goals.
World Cup: The Ranking of the Best African Scorers in History
5. Wahbi Khazri (Tunisia) – 3 goals
The Tunisian playmaker scored three goals in the World Cup between 2018 and 2022. He opened his account in Russia against Panama before netting twice in Qatar. His goal against France secured a historic win for the Eagles of Carthage (1-0), although this victory wasn’t enough to qualify Tunisia for the Round of 16.
5. Papa Bouba Diop (Senegal) – 3 goals
All three of Papa Bouba Diop’s goals came during Senegal’s remarkable run in 2002. He first secured a historic victory against reigning world champions France, then scored twice against Uruguay. His performances were crucial to the Lions of the Teranga’s surprising journey to the semifinals. He passed away in 2020 but remains a legend of African football.
5. Yoane Wissa (DR Congo) – 3 goals
Yoane Wissa became a national hero during the 2026 World Cup. His equalizer against Portugal marked DR Congo’s very first goal in World Cup history. A few days later, he scored twice against Uzbekistan, giving the Leopards their first win in the tournament and a historic qualification for the Round of 16.
5. Youssef En-Nesyri (Morocco) – 3 goals
Youssef En-Nesyri is Morocco’s top scorer in World Cup history. After scoring against Spain in 2018, he found the net again against Canada in 2022. His famous header against Portugal in the quarterfinals sent Morocco to the semifinals, a historic first for any African team.
5. Ismael Saibari (Morocco) – 3 goals
The 2026 World Cup was a breakout for Ismael Saibari. The Moroccan became the first African player to score in all three group stage matches of a single World Cup. He netted against Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti, but unfortunately, his tournament ended prematurely due to injury. At just 25, he still has the potential to aim even higher in future editions.
5. Mohamed Salah (Egypt) – 3 goals
Even though his legend is mostly built at the club level, Mohamed Salah ranks among the top African scorers in World Cup history. He scored twice in Russia in 2018 against Russia and Saudi Arabia, then added a third goal against New Zealand in 2026. This last edition also saw Egypt reach the Round of 16.
5. André Ayew (Ghana) – 3 goals
Having participated in several World Cups, André Ayew shone in 2014 with goals against the United States and Germany. Eight years later, he scored again against Portugal in Qatar. His consistency and longevity make him one of the most notable African players in the tournament’s recent history.
5. Samuel Eto’o (Cameroon) – 3 goals
Samuel Eto’o has three World Cup goals despite an exceptional international career. He scored once in 2002 and twice in the 2010 edition. Despite his immense talent, the former FC Barcelona striker never managed to lead Cameroon beyond the group stage.
4. Ahmed Musa (Nigeria) – 4 goals
Ahmed Musa is Nigeria’s top scorer in World Cup history with four goals. He netted twice against Argentina in 2014 and repeated the feat four years later with two goals against Iceland. Few African players can boast of scoring two doubles in two different tournaments.
2. Roger Milla (Cameroon) – 5 goals

Roger Milla remains a true icon of African football. Four of his five goals came during the 1990 World Cup, where he led Cameroon to the quarterfinals. In 1994, he scored again against Russia at the age of 42, becoming the oldest scorer in World Cup history, a record that still stands.
2. Ismaïla Sarr (Senegal) – 5 goals

Thanks to his outstanding 2026 World Cup, Ismaïla Sarr joins Roger Milla with five goals. After scoring against Ecuador in 2022, he netted four more in North America, including a brace against Norway and goals against Iraq and Belgium. At 28, he still has his sights set on Gyan’s record.
1. Asamoah Gyan (Ghana) – 6 goals

With six goals in eleven matches played between 2006 and 2014, Asamoah Gyan is the all-time top African scorer in World Cup history. He kicks off with a goal just 68 seconds into the match against the Czech Republic in 2006. In 2010, despite his infamous missed penalty against Uruguay in the quarter-finals, he has an exceptional tournament. Two more goals in 2014 secure a record that still stands.
