Just hours before the Round of 16 match in the 2026 World Cup between Belgium and Senegal, the focus is on both the sporting stakes and the human connections between the players on both benches. Rudi Garcia, the coach of the Red Devils, spoke about several strong relationships he has with figures in Senegalese football. With memories from their formative years, professional debuts, and intertwined paths in clubs and national teams, the French coach framed this clash in a more personal context, without diminishing the intensity of the upcoming encounter.
One of these connections is with Pape Thiaw, whose early career was influenced by Garcia during his time at AS Saint-Étienne. The Belgian coach reflected on that formative period and the role he believes he played in the development of his former player.
“With Pape Thiaw, there’s a special story. Back when I was on the staff at Saint-Étienne, I advised Robert Nouzaret to give him a chance. I told him he had incredible qualities. He joined the group and immediately showed what he was capable of,” he explained.
Garcia also shared that this period was recently discussed between the two men during the draw for the competition, a sign of a shared memory that has remained alive over the years.

The coach then emphasized another strong link in his career, that with Idrissa Gana Guèye, whom he launched into the top level while managing LOSC Lille. Arriving from the Diambars academy, the midfielder quickly established himself in the Lille squad.
“With Gana, the bond is even stronger. We won the double with Lille and he was already playing in a Coupe de France final at just 20 years old. We will be linked forever,” Garcia recalled.
This sporting relationship, built over several seasons, is still seen as a significant milestone in the careers of both men.
Despite these connections, Rudi Garcia clearly separated emotions from competition. The upcoming match between Belgium and Senegal remains, in his view, a high-level clash where each side will defend its interests. However, the coach highlighted the human aspect of this reunion, without ambiguity about the intensity of the upcoming duel.
“I’ll give him a big hug before the match, another one after. But during the 90 minutes, I’ll be his worst enemy,” he said about Pape Thiaw, summarizing the balance between personal respect and high-level sporting demands.
