On the eve of the World Cup Round of 16 clash between Senegal and Belgium, scheduled for Wednesday at 8 PM GMT in Seattle, Tom Saintfiet shared his analysis of the match. The former coach of Mali and Gambia, known for his deep understanding of African football, believes that the Lions of Teranga represent one of the toughest opponents for the Red Devils at this stage of the competition. He thinks this matchup will be balanced and tactically demanding.
In an interview with Belgian media, he emphasized Senegal’s offensive strengths:

“Senegal has great offensive qualities with Mané, Jackson, Gueye, and Mbaye, but we must not forget that this team also has attacking potential in other areas. The midfield can be dominant, and it will be a real challenge for Belgium to contain it,” he explained.
He then suggested a solution for the Belgian midfield to counter this Senegalese influence, mentioning a precise organization. The former coach believes the midfield must be structured to withstand the opponent’s intensity while maintaining the ability to push forward.
“I would put Onana, Tielemans, and De Bruyne in midfield, even though I don’t find Tielemans impressive during this World Cup,” he added.
Saintfiet also pointed out the dynamic Senegalese flanks, which he considers particularly active. According to him, the full-backs heavily participate in offensive phases, pushing high up the pitch and forcing the opponent to stay alert. He highlighted the Lions’ ability to stretch opposing defensive blocks and create openings on the sides. This wing play is, in his view, a major element of Senegal’s setup and a potential imbalance factor against Belgium.
Strategically, he believes Belgium could surprise by changing its offensive habits. He even considered starting without Romelu Lukaku to prioritize speed and transitions. He elaborated on his idea:
“Following this logic, I would put Lukaku on the bench. Senegal is a team that likes to dictate the game, and that can be an advantage for Belgium. By using offensive transitions, their best weapon, the Belgian team can put the Senegalese in trouble. In this regard, I would align Fernandez-Pardo to seek that depth, with players like Doku and Lukebakio,” he stated.
Finally, Tom Saintfiet stressed the overall balance of the match, which he sees as particularly tight. He believes both teams have solid arguments, and the difference could come down to details or the depth of the benches in case of extra time. He concluded by mentioning an uncertain opposition between two teams capable of neutralizing each other.
“Senegal is the worst possible opponent. It’s a 50-50, even though I don’t forget they conceded six goals in the group stage,” he concluded.
