This Sunday evening, Kylian Mbappe could have been rested against US Revel, along with most of the other usual PSG starters. However, Luis Enrique decided to start him. After the match, the Parisian coach explained his decision to field the number 7 in the 32nd round of the Coupe de France.
PSG and Kylian Mbappe cruise past US Revel
Despite a promising start, Revel (R1) eventually succumbed to the Ligue 1 leaders, PSG, with a goal from Kylian Mbappe (0-1, 16′). Although Garcia, the Revel goalkeeper, repelled the initial Parisian attacks, he couldn’t do anything about the own goal scored by his teammate N’Guessan, following a deflected cross (0-2, 38′).
The last five minutes of the first half were a real nightmare for Revel, conceding two more goals, including a magnificent one from Kylian Mbappe, assisted by a lob from Asensio (0-4, 45′).
In the second half, despite an unwavering desire to preserve the score, Revel was once again caught off guard on a deep pass, allowing Mbappe to complete a hat-trick (0-5, 48′). Changes made by Revel allowed the team to experience a historic match by maintaining a five-goal lead until the 70th minute when Gonçalo Ramos converted a penalty for his first goal of the year (0-6, 71′).
Towards the end of the match, Cher Ndour (scorer of his first professional goal) and Randal Kolo Muani (with a brace) widened the gap (0-9), giving Paris Saint-Germain the second-largest victory in the Round of 32, after Lille’s 12-0 win against Golden Lion.
Luis Enrique shares insight on Kylian Mbappe
Like the other usual starters for PSG, Kylian Mbappe could have been rested against US Revel this Sunday evening. Luis Enrique had indeed cast doubt on this during the pre-match press conference: “Any situation has different versions. We will only play four games in January. This could be the ideal opportunity for him to rest, but also to play. It depends on which side we take.”
Ultimately, Luis Enrique started Kylian Mbappe and even named him captain. Interviewed by BeIN SPORTS after PSG’s overwhelming victory against US Revel in the 32nd round of the Coupe de France (0-9), the Spanish coach justified his choice. According to Luis Enrique, he leaves it up to Kylian Mbappé to decide when to play and when to rest.
“On Saturday, we were discussing whether to rest Kylian Mbappe or play him. What prompted you to play him? Because Kylian Mbappe wanted to play, and when he wants to play, we don’t have much to say. The rest, we just have to watch and enjoy seeing it, whether it’s the coaching staff, the fans, or the opponents, quite simply,” admitted Luis Enrique, PSG’s coach.
Doing everything not to rush Kylian Mbappe
It must be said that at PSG, they are in the realm of diplomatic correctness. With the contract of their star ending in a few months, the club is doing everything not to upset the child from Bondy. This confession from Luis Enrique could be part of this managerial policy.
It’s not a done deal yet, as Mbappe remains undecided. Worse, this Sunday evening, Foot Mercato triggered a real shockwave by stating with certainty that Kylian Mbappé had given his agreement to Real Madrid in the past few days. The all-time top scorer of Paris Saint-Germain seems to finally believe that it is time to leave France to join a club whose history and culture of winning still surpass those of PSG.
Thus, the summer of 2024 already promises to be very eventful in Madrid. But the twists don’t stop there, as AS reports that Real Madrid is also considering recruiting another immense football star in the form of Erling Haaland.
