Alan Shearer has spoken out about the controversial incident involving Youri Tielemans during the match against Senegal, a moment that sparked plenty of debate over a potential penalty. The former England international provided a strong analysis, arguing that the referee’s decision should not favor Belgium in such a questionable situation. He believes the intensity of the duel and the nature of the contact do not justify a maximum penalty in a knockout match.
“For me, that’s absolutely not a penalty. This is football, it’s a contact sport. If we’re giving penalties for the slightest contact in the box, we might as well stop defenders from challenging.”

“Camara has every right to play the ball. There is contact, sure, but not every contact is a foul. Tielemans goes down, but I don’t see enough evidence to justify awarding a penalty.”
Shearer then emphasizes the importance of the competitive context, especially in the World Cup, where every refereeing decision can have a decisive impact on the final outcome. He believes the standards must be particularly high in such matches.
“At this stage of the World Cup, you can’t decide the fate of a knockout match on such a soft penalty. The referee must be absolutely certain, and I don’t think the action justifies such a decision.”
Continuing his analysis, he also mentions the risk of excessive interpretation of contacts in the box, which he believes distorts the spirit of the game and penalizes defensive teams that challenge fairly.
“If this penalty is awarded, it’s Senegal that gets robbed. They defended brilliantly, worked hard, and we can’t ruin everything because of a decision like that.”
The former striker also supports the referee’s decision not to stop the game, arguing that the current trend in football sometimes leads to punishing minimal contacts at the expense of the flow of the game.
“I actually appreciate that the referee let the game continue. Football is becoming too ‘soft’. Players look for the slightest contact instead of trying to stay on their feet and finish the play.”
He concludes his analysis by reminding everyone of the role of video assistance and the need to limit its intervention to clear errors, in order to preserve the fluidity and fairness of the sport.

“VAR should protect the game, not create controversy. For me, this is not a clear error. It’s just contact, nothing more.”
“Belgium will be frustrated, but if they want to win this match, they need to create better chances instead of relying on a penalty claim like this.”
